Man arrested with large cache of explosives in Nedunkerny

A man was arrested with a large cache of explosives and anti-personnel mines in a house at Senapilavu in Nedunkerny, Vavuniya this afternoon

Police said the Nedunkerny police found the explosives through a raid following a tip-off about a person collecting explosives.

Police found 21.635kg of TNT, 1.610kg grams of P.E. explosives and 148 anti-personnel mines in the house.

Among them, 22 anti-personnel mines were found to be active.

Investigations revealed that the suspect had been working as a bomb de-activator for an NGO for a long time and where the mines and explosives believed to have been collected.

Police said they were investigating whether the suspect was a former LTTE cadre and the motive behind possession of those explosives.

The 32-year-old suspect, a resident of Oddusudan, to be produced before the Vavuniya Magistrate's Court.
Two suicide vests weighing 5 kgs found in Vavuniya
Two suicide vests used by the LTTE weighing 5 kilos were found buried in a forest in Sinnathampanei in Settikulam, Vavuniya yesterday, police said.
According to information received by the Vavuniya State Intelligence, the two suicide vestswere found with the assistance of the Settikulam Police and STF.
Police suspect that the two suicide vests might have been safely buried by the LTTE during the last stage of the war.
The Settikulam Police said that they are seeking the assistance of the STF to deactivate the two vests following a court order.
